Description
I picked up the Starlight trade paperback this weekend and I loved it to bits, to the point of having to do this piece of fanart.
Mark Millar is pretty much being known for his tales which definitely skew more towards the harsh and cynical side of things. People are cruel, selfish, and petty. Heroism is derided and the world is a cruel place.
But not here. The saga of Duke McQueen is at both quiet, humble and all too human, and yet a raucous space adventure in the vein of the old Flash Gordon serials, without a single hint of irony or cynicism. Duke is a hero, through and through, caring not for glory or fame but just for the love of a good woman. He may be old, but he can still hold his own with the best of them. And his sidekick Krish aka Space Boy is one of the rarest of all child characters- an endearing, competent sidekick who is not at all annoying or drags down the narrative.
I really can't rave about this book enough. It's a really great read, and I'd really encourage people to read it if they get a chance.
